Finding Inspiration in Hampshire: Painting Local Landscapes and Seasonal Colour

Living in Hampshire offers us artists endless inspiration. From rolling countryside and ancient woodlands to dramatic coastlines and beautifully kept gardens, our county is filled with colour, texture, and atmosphere just waiting to be captured on paper and canvas.
As a mixed media landscape artist, Hampshire’s scenery plays a huge role in both my own creative practice and the art classes I teach. One of the most rewarding things I find about painting local landscapes is learning to truly observe the changing seasons, shifting light, and subtle colours that make each place unique.
Whether you’re an experienced painter or completely new to art, using familiar surroundings as inspiration can help make creativity feel more personal, meaningful, and accessible.

Discovering the Beauty of Hampshire Through Art
Hampshire is incredibly diverse when it comes to landscape inspiration. On one day you might find yourself inspired by the soft greens of the South Downs countryside, and on another by the changing blues and greys of the coast.
Some of my favourite sources of inspiration include:
Quiet country lanes and hedgerows
Coastal walks and sea textures
Woodland paths and wildflowers
Historic gardens and seasonal planting
Open skies and shifting weather
Painting local scenery helps us creatively connect more deeply with places that we already love and recognise. It also encourages a more mindful way of seeing the world such as noticing colour, texture, light, and movement in our everyday surroundings.
Exploring Seasonal Palettes
Spring and Autumn in Hampshire brings some of the most dramatic colours of the year. But year round the landscape offers us a myriad of beauty and colour to explore and these seasonal shifts often inspire the palettes we explore in class. For example I encourage students to experiment with:
Layered greens inspired by new growth
Soft washes for spring skies
Textural techniques for blossom and foliage
Mixed media mark-making to reflect natural movement
Gentle coastal colour combinations
I find working seasonally helps students build confidence with colour, while also developing a stronger connection to the natural world around them.
Using Local Scenery as Creative Inspiration
One of the things I encourage most in my classes is using local scenery as a starting point for artistic exploration. You don’t need to travel somewhere dramatic to create meaningful artwork, it's all here on our doorstep!
For example a local woodland walk, a favourite beach, or even the colours in a nearby garden can become the foundation for expressive landscape paintings and sketchbook studies. For many students, this approach feels less intimidating and more personal than trying to copy unfamiliar scenes. It also helps build observational skills naturally, encouraging artists to notice:
Seasonal colour changes
Interesting textures in nature
Atmospheric light
Organic shapes and patterns
The emotional feeling of a place
Connecting Art Classes with Eco Printing and Landscape Projects
Nature-inspired creativity extends beyond painting alone. Many of my classes and workshops also connect with eco printing and mixed media landscape projects inspired directly by Hampshire’s natural surroundings.
Eco printing allows students to experiment with leaves, flowers, and botanical textures to create beautifully organic patterns and marks. These natural elements can then be incorporated into sketchbooks, layered landscapes, and mixed media artwork.
These projects encourage:
Creativity through experimentation
Sustainable use of natural materials
A deeper appreciation for local landscapes
Individual artistic expression
Mindful observation of seasonal changes
Students often discover that combining painting with eco printing and mixed media techniques opens up exciting new creative possibilities.
Art That Connects You to Place
Creating art inspired by Hampshire’s landscapes is about more than simply painting a view. It’s about slowing down, observing the beauty around us, and translating those experiences into something personal and expressive.
By drawing inspiration from local countryside, coastlines, gardens, and seasonal colour, students not only develop artistic skills but also a stronger connection to the environment and places they call home.
Through supportive, inclusive classes, my goal is to help students feel inspired by the landscapes around them and confident in expressing their own creative response to Hampshire’s natural beauty.
