Gelli Plate Printing Workshops in Hampshire

Discover hands-on gelli plate printing workshops where layered colour, texture, and experimentation come together to create unique works of art.

explore gelli plate printing

Gelli plate printing is a contemporary printmaking technique that uses a soft, flexible plate to create layered, one-of-a-kind designs. Combining paint, texture, and spontaneous mark-making, each print evolves organically and results in work that is both expressive and entirely unique.

At its core, gelli plate printing is about exploration and creative freedom. It encourages a hands-on approach to making, where experimentation leads the process and each piece reflects a moment of discovery.

THE PROCESS

The process begins by applying acrylic paint to the gel plate, which acts as a smooth, responsive surface. Textures are then introduced using tools, stencils, or found materials before paper is pressed onto the plate to lift the image. Layers can be built up gradually, allowing colours and forms to interact in unexpected ways.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE

No two gelli prints are ever the same. The technique embraces variation, where subtle shifts in pressure, paint, and timing create distinctive results.

This unpredictability is central to the process, often leading to surprising compositions that cannot be precisely replicated.

APPLICATIONS

Gelli plate prints can stand alone as original artworks or be incorporated into any mixed media project.

They are widely used in collages, art journaling, textile design and surface pattern exploration, offering you endless creative possibilities.
